The Smoky Brown Cockroach

The Smoky Brown Cockroach

It’s springtime, and with new nests come new pests! Cockroaches are one of the most hated— and most common— insects out there. Nobody wants to see one creeping up the living room wall or crawling across the dining table. Chances are, you’ve seen several smoky brown cockroaches in your lifetime, and maybe you’ve even mistaken them for something else. Regardless, nobody wants to share a home with these nasty critters for long.

How to Spot One

Smoky brown cockroaches are dark brown, shiny, winged insects that can grow to be as large as 1.5 inches long. They’re primarily attracted to trash, crawl spaces, standing water, tree holes, mulch beds and overall warm, moist environments. In the spring, they travel into homes more frequently through cracks and open windows to take shelter. They’re primarily spotted in the nighttime hours, and you may even find droppings in areas frequented by the roaches.

Prevention

Don’t worry! You can do a few things to prevent a cockroach infestation. Ensure that all trash and cardboard is disposed of properly, pet food shouldn’t sit out in the open in your home or on the patio, and make sure to seal any cracks around your doors, baseboards and windows. You can also place a dehumidifier in humid areas of your home, and make sure that your attic has ample ventilation. Smoky brown cockroaches can live for over a year, and females can produce over 30 egg cases within a lifetime. So, a little prevention can go a long way!
