Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz. You know what that annoying sound is…it’s a pesky fly circling around you inside your house. When you see a fly buzzing around your home, what do you do? Chase it with a flyswatter or a newspaper? Wave your hands like crazy to “scare” it away? Whatever your method may be to get rid of these annoying bugs, there’s one question that stands above all. How in the world did this fly get in my house!?
Our experts at Clark Exterminating decided to dive into what attracts these pesky things into our homes, especially during the summer. Here are a few ways to prevent them from entering your home. We’ve added a few extra facts to take into consideration the next time you see a housefly in your home.
Remove any potential breeding grounds for flies from your home.
Flies like to lay eggs in the same places where they feed. Any organic matter you have in your garbage cans, such as fruit, vegetables, or even meat, can provide the perfect environment for a fly to lay its eggs, which turn into maggots, which eventually turn into adult houseflies. Female flies can lay about 500 to 600 eggs in their lifetime. Once a maggot turns into an adult housefly, it has a lifetime of about 21 days.
If you’re throwing away that bunch of bananas because it’s a little too brown or some chicken that has gone bad in the fridge, be sure to seal your garbage bags as tight as you can and get it out of your house as soon as possible. These kinds of garbage are a mecca for flies looking for a place to lay their eggs.
Take precautions to keep flies out of your home.
Being proactive is one of the best ways you can help keep those pesky houseflies out of your home. Along with keeping that rotting garbage out, seal all open cracks and crevices around your home. Not only will this keep flies out, but it’ll also prevent other unwelcome pests such as spiders, cockroaches, etc. out of your home. If you need some fresh air, make sure you’re opening a window or door with a mesh screen with no holes, where little critters could squeeze through.
Houseflies carry diseases.
Not only are flies just plain gross; they can pose a health hazard if they hang around your house long enough. Some of the most common bacterial diseases that houseflies can carry are E.coli, Shigella, and Enterococcus, according to healthhype.com.
Flies spread these diseases through their bodies, vomit, and feces. A fly feeds on pretty much anything humans would eat, along with other organic matter. (We won’t go into the gross details, but you can take a guess.) The fly’s diseases and germs are passed to any food that the fly eats or lands on. When a fly lands on your food, it spits up enzymes onto the food to dissolve it, in order to eat it in liquid form.
