Termites 101 | Types of Termites in Little Rock & Treatment

Termites 101

Got termites in Arkansas? You’re not alone. Termites damage almost 600,000 homes and cause around $5 billion in property damage each year in the U.S. If you need termite inspections in Little Rock, termite treatment in Jacksonville, or termite prevention tips in Cabot, Conway, Benton, Malvern, Bryant, or Hot Springs then Clark Exterminating has you covered. With over 30 years of experience in Central Arkansas pest control, we have the expertise and equipment to tackle the toughest termite problems.

Now that the cold weather is beginning to pass, the ground will start to warm up and the overwintering process undergone by many pests will come to a close. With spring, termites will look for opportunities to expand and reproduce. Unfortunately, that means your Little Rock or Jacksonville home will be prime real estate for termite infestations. The first sign of trouble is known as swarming–winged explorer termites searching for a new home for the colony. Since it’s often difficult to know how to tell the difference between termites and winged ants, many homeowners disregard these flying pests, but if they decide your home is a good habitat you can be sure the rest of the colony will move in. Homes with winter storm damage are at even greater risk, so take care to keep your house in good repair.

There are almost 2,000 recorded species of termites out there, but luckily there is only one identified termite type in Little Rock:

Subterranean Termites
This type of termite is by far the most destructive in the country and infests homes in every state but Alaska. If you see mud tubes, dug for protection and to provide easy access to food, you know you have a subterranean termite problem. This type of termite has underground colonies of up to 2 million bugs, and swarm in daylight hours during the spring months.

Formosan Termites
Luckily, this incredibly aggressive type of termite has not been found in Arkansas, but it occupies many surrounding states such as Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, and more. First brought over from China, these destructive termites build massive mud colonies within structures, and once they infest a structure they are very difficult to remove. Right now Arkansas only has to deal with subterranean termites, but a Formosan termite migration is not out of the question.

So how can you prevent termites from entering your Arkansas home? Well, unfortunately, the best you can do is stay vigilant for signs of termite infestation. If you notice any of the following, call our termite experts at Clark Exterminating today. There’s almost no effective DIY termite treatment that will ensure full extermination of termite colonies, so it’s worth contacting pest control specialists for true peace of mind.

1. Soft or hollow wood in your home
2. Cracked paint
3. Small swarmer wings on doors or windows
4. Mud tubes on the outside of your home
5. Dark or blistered wood
6. Termite feces (it looks like sawdust)
