The 411 on Vapor Barriers

411 Vapor Barrier

Our mission at Clark Exterminating is to fix any and every type of bug or pest problem. Getting rid of bugs that invade your home or business is our specialty. But how do you keep them from creeping into your personal space in the first place? Well, here at Clark Exterminating, we handle that, too.

There are many ways to prevent bugs from entering your home or business. There are the common culprits – cracks in windows, door frames, and other small openings around the house. There’s a lesser-known problem that originates from under the crawlspace of your home…it’s called FUNGUS. If ignored and left untreated, the fungus can damage the wood structures under your home. The good news is that fungus can be treated. The installation of a vapor barrier can help prevent fungus from returning to your home.

What is a vapor barrier, you ask? Well, lucky for you, you’ve come to the right place! A vapor barrier is a thin layer of plastic that covers approximately 80% of the ground under your home preventing moisture from the soil from rising and condensing on the wood. If left unchecked, the fungus is able to grow on the wood surfaces and create damage (and also makes a great home for bugs). It’s more of a common problem than you might think, especially in the humid, moist regions of the U.S. like Arkansa

So how do you know if you need a vapor barrier? It’s pretty straightforward. Most homes with a crawlspace, unless in an arid climate, need a vapor barrier. Our technicians are trained to inspect for any signs of moisture or fungus. It’s important to take into consideration the amount of rainwater that can make its way under your house when going through this installation process. Rainwater creates the moisture that then becomes the perfect place for bugs and fungus.
Once you’ve decided on a vapor barrier, one of our trained technicians will come out to install it, after any current problems are fixed. One of our technicians will cover the dirt floor of your crawl space with “Visqueen” or a layer of thin plastic to keep moisture out. When the plastic layer is installed, it creates a barrier to prevent new problems from forming.

Not sure if you need a vapor barrier? No problem! We’re available to come out and inspect your home and give you a quote with no obligation. A normal vapor barrier installation usually ranges in price from $250 – $300.Got a bigger problem than moisture? We’d love to help you fix your bug problem.
